My favorite boy: First flight

In February, we went on our first family vacation!

It wasn’t really a full-fledged family vacation. Oneal was actually working as an organizer for WordCamp Asia, which was taking place in Bangkok, Thailand. Lucas and I tagged along for some sight-seeing.

It was a trip of many firsts. It was the first time Oneal and I were traveling together in years, and Oneal’s first international travel since 2013. But most important of all: it was Lucas’s first time on a plane, and his first time out of the Philippines!

We were so excited and scared for him. I was so worried that he would be anxious, that he would get dizzy or throw up. I was worried that he would cry or panic. Most ridiculous of all, I was so worried that he wouldn’t have fun in Bangkok!

I am happy to report that he was perfectly fine.

Lucas was so excited. He was excited at the airport. He was thrilled to get on the plane. He was so curious about all the buttons, the fold-out table, the window. He was fascinated by the seats and the flight safety information. He was excited about his inflight meal. He was perfectly fine through take-off and landing, and in fact he was the one trying to make me feel better!

So I’m happy to say that Lucas is a pretty good flier. Oneal and I think it helps that he’s six years old. He’s old enough to understand most of what’s going on. He doesn’t need breastmilk or diapers anymore. He can easily articulate pretty much anything he’s feeling, and can ask questions about what he doesn’t know or understand. He’s of a very curious and enthusiastic disposition, and so instead of anxiety he approached the experience with joy and wonder. I think it’s a good age to start traveling.

And we’re all looking forward to more travels together.
